Liquidambar styraciflua 'Slender Silhouette'
Sweet Gum
Description: 'Slender Silhouette' is a medium-large, fairly fast growing tree, with an even strictly upright habit. The deeply-lobed, star-shaped, dark green leaves cover the narrow tree densely, and then turn brilliant shades of yellow, orange and red in autumn, remaining on the tree for an extended period of time. The inconspicuous flowers are followed by spiky capsules that persist in the winter.
History: Introduced around 2000 having being found growing in the wild in Tennessee. Received the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit.
Liquidambar Growing Tips: Liquidambar should be planted in full sun to achieve their best colour, in neutral to acid soil that is moist but well-drained. Once the trees mature, they tolerate occasional drought as well as periodic flooding. Protect from frost when young.
Height and Spread (after 10 years): 6m x 1m
