A tree that has been grown in the field and then lifted out of the ground when dormant. Available from November to March. The roots are more open and the direct contact with the soil encourages them to settle in and establish more readily.
These are 2yr old trees that have been grown 1yr in the field and the second in a pot. Container trees can be planted at any time of the year but establish best when planted during the autumn and need to be watered well during the first summer.
Common Hornbeam
Grey fluted trunk, ovate, serrate, ribbed leaves turns yellow in autumn. Green catkins followed by winged nuts.
Hornbeam
Gold-lime green leaves turn chartreuse yellow-green from mid-summer. Suitable for specimen and hedging use.
Pyramidal habit, narrow when young and broadening as it matures. Good autumn colours of mellow yellow.
Erect pyramidal habit. Narrow as a young tree broadening with age. A particularly good upright form.
Autumn display of bright red and intense fiery orange foliage, usually persisting until late November.
Upright Hornbeam
Narrow as a young tree broadening with age. Fruiting catkins in the spring. Leaves turn yellow and orange in autumn.
Weeping Hornbeam
Graceful, mushroom-headed tree with steeply pendant branches. Yellow and orange autumn colour.
A rarely seen American Hornbeam with a columnar shape. Attractive orange, red and purple foliage in autumn.
Monkeytail Hornbeam
A rare, wonderful hornbeam. Large, handsome leaves that are boldly ribbed and orange tinted in spring.
Japanese Hornbeam
Small, wide spreading tree. Purple-brown fruiting catkins. Leaves appear burgundy before turning dark green.
Hardy, slow growing rounded tree with yellow autumn colour. Hanging green/yellow flowers mature to brown catkins.
