Bare root trees now being lifted

Each autumn we lift over 300,000 trees from our fields when they fall dormant.

These trees are sold on to nurseries, commercial growers, orchard schemes, mail order companies and private gardeners or they are potted up to be grown through the summer for garden centres. We carefully prune and look after these trees so that they are in excellent shape and health for gardeners to take home and plant.

The trees are lifted mechanically and the nursery team will follow behind gathering them up into bundles of five. These bundles are then 'heeled in' to sawdust to keep the roots safe from frost or dessication until they are planted or potted.

Different trees fall dormant at different times. In general two year old trees for onward sale are lifted before the one year 'maidens' which are either sold or potted.
