Raspberry Red Rhubarb Back To List Description: Raspberry Red is a modern, relatively early variety of high quality production. Deep red thick stalks are ready in Spring without the need for forcing. The stems are tender, bursting with sweet and delicious flavours. The best tasting Rhubarb of them all. Best when baked into pies and crumbles but also tasty when they're eaten fresh. The leaves are very attractive and atrovirens, but they have a level of oxalic acid so high in the leaves that they are slightly poisonous. A very highly reccomended variety due to it's reliable cropping every year! History: Originates from West Yorkshire, UK. Rhubarb Growing Tips: Rhubarbs need an open, sunny site with moist, but free-draining soil. Avoid frost pockets as the stems are susceptible to frost. Do not harvest during the first year after planting as this will reduce the vigour. Once planted, it should not be moved and appreciates a generous annual mulch of well-rotted compost or manure.
