M. stellate x M. liliiflora
Description: A compact medium shrub with one of the longest flowering periods, starting on leafless branches in mid-April and continued into the summer months, complimenting the dark green leaves. The deep purple buds open to upright goblet shaped pale pink blooms, lighter on the inside. A perfect Magnolia for the smaller garden.
History: Raised in 1935 by Carl E Kern of South Ohio and named in 1948 to commemorate his son who was killed in France on V.E Day. Received the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit in 2012.
Magnolia Growing Tips: Full sun to part shade lover, best grown in consistently moist, slightly acidic, well-drained soils. Provide sheltered site as buds and flowers may be damaged by cold winds, and late frosts. Shape and size can be controlled by pruning which should be done either immediately after flowering or during late summer.
Height and Spread (after 10 years): 4m x 2m
