Mulberry trees are trees of great character that become gnarled and picturesque with age. They have large, broad, heart shaped leaves turning butter yellow in the autumn. Delicious, large and succulent fruits crop early in life. Sharp and intense flavour. Can be eaten fresh or used in jams. Harvesting is best done each day.
If hand picked, the fruits will be bruised and cause staining to the fingers and clothes. For a clean operation, take a large sheet and lay it under the tree and shake the boughs vigorously.
Perform best when planted in a sunny, well drained site. Mulberry trees can also be grown against walls if space is limited. Self fertile.
