The Lagerstroemia, commonly known as the crape myrtle, is a stunning genus of deciduous and evergreen trees and shrubs famed for their vibrant, long-lasting flowers and striking bark. Native to Asia and parts of Australia, this versatile plant has become a favorite in warm and temperate climates worldwide, adding beauty and structure to gardens and urban landscapes.
Crape myrtles are renowned for their clusters of crinkled, papery blooms, which come in shades of pink, purple, red, and white, depending on the variety. These flowers appear in mid to late summer, providing a spectacular display when many other plants have finished blooming. Beyond their flowers, Lagerstroemia species boast ornamental peeling bark in shades of cinnamon, tan, or gray, adding year-round visual interest.
Popular species like Lagerstroemia indica and Lagerstroemia fauriei are widely grown for their adaptability and ornamental value. Modern hybrids often combine disease resistance, compact growth habits, and a wide range of flower colours, making them suitable for small gardens, borders, or as standout specimens.
Crape myrtles thrive in full sun and prefer well-drained soil but are remarkably drought-tolerant once established. Regular pruning encourages vigorous blooming and helps maintain their shape, whether as a shrub, small tree, or multi-stemmed form.
Whether you’re looking to add dramatic summer color, textural interest, or architectural beauty to your landscape, Lagerstroemia trees are a low-maintenance and rewarding choice.
