A tree that has been grown in the field and then lifted out of the ground when dormant. Available from November to March. The roots are more open and the direct contact with the soil encourages them to settle in and establish more readily.
These are 2yr old trees that have been grown 1yr in the field and the second in a pot. Container trees can be planted at any time of the year but establish best when planted during the autumn and need to be watered well during the first summer.
The Paulownia, often referred to as the princess tree or empress tree, is a fast-growing, deciduous tree that is celebrated for its dramatic floral displays, large, tropical-looking leaves, and remarkable growth rate. Native to China, the Paulownia belongs to the Paulowniaceae family and has become a popular choice in ornamental and commercial planting due to its beauty and versatility.
One of the standout features of the Paulownia is its stunning springtime flowers. Large, fragrant, trumpet-shaped blooms in shades of lavender, purple, or blue appear in clusters on bare branches, creating a spectacular display before the foliage emerges. These flowers are highly attractive to pollinators, making the tree a valuable addition to wildlife-friendly gardens.
The Paulownia’s oversized, heart-shaped leaves contribute to its bold, architectural appeal and provide dense shade, making it an excellent choice for creating a lush, tropical atmosphere in gardens. Known for its rapid growth—up to 6 meters (20 feet) in a single year under optimal conditions—the Paulownia is often used for reforestation, erosion control, and timber production.
Paulownia thrives in well-drained soil and full sun and is highly tolerant of poor soils, drought, and urban pollution. While its rapid growth and adaptability are assets, care should be taken in managing its spread, as it can become invasive in some regions.
Whether you’re seeking a dramatic ornamental tree, a fast-growing shade provider, or a source of high-value timber, the Paulownia offers a unique combination of beauty and practicality.
