Budding 2019 at Frank P Matthews! 21/08/2019 Our field team work have been working very hard over the last 6 weeks chip budding. They work in pairs, one budding and one tying. Each pair can bud up to 1500 stocks per day and 330,000 stocks over a 6 week period. The budwood is cut from trees in our mother orchards and the rootstocks are planted out in the fields in the spring. Once the bud has taken the tie is removed after about 6 weeks and the rootstock is cut back the following spring to allow the variety to grow up into the tree. We propogate around 70% of our trees in this way.
