Tree Planting Distances

21/20/2020

These planting distances are approximate.  There are many factors involved which will affect crop load and eventual size of tree. For instance availability of light and moisture during the growing season, variety of the fruit, depth of soil, quality of the soil and nutrition, whether there is grass or weeds around the tree, the site where the tree is planted.  Trees which are poorly pollinated will produce less fruit and therefore the tree will grow more during the season.  The best advice is to give a tree as much space as possible.

Hazel Planting Distance

15’ x 7’ 6” and grub every other tree ‘in row’ in the 10th year to make a 15’ x 15’ square plantation.

15’ x 7’ 6” and coppice every other tree after 10 years but do not grub as hazels respond well to rejuvenating in this way as long as they are on their own roots and not grafted.

18’ x 10’ and leave the trees to develop natural shape and size.
