Flanders Giant Medlar

Medlar

Description: Flanders Giant is a productive and easy to grow variety. Fruit is large in size, pleasantly flavoured and tart if eaten raw. Very large clusters of white flowers during the spring. A hardy variety. Best eaten with wine, port and cheese, or made into excellent jelly. 'Quiets the heated stomach'. This old saying has been scientifically supported by findings that shows pectins, sugars, tannins and gums in medlars to be an ideal combination for easing indigestion.

Medlar Growing Tips: They thrive in deep, fertile well-drained soil but will tolerate most soil types. They will do best in a warm, sheltered position in full sun or partial shade. Recommend pruning in the winter to maintain its healthy shape, good fruiting and flowering. When picked, the fruit should be stored in sawdust in stone jars until soft (bletting).
