Plovdivski Walnut

Walnut

Description: Plovdivski is a Bulgarian variety that's often grown for timber as well as it's fruit. The large nuts produce a delicious flavour but sometimes a slightly lighter crop than other varieties. Used for pickling if the nuts are harvested in July when they're green or they can be picked in the Autumn when the nuts are ripe for drying and storing. A healthy tree with its blight resistance. Very suitable for all UK areas due to it's early ripening which avoids frosts. This is certainly a nut for quality not quantity!

History: Developed in Bulgaria.

Walnut Growing Tips: Prefer to be planted in full sun or light shade with a sheltered position with no frost pockets. Will tolerate many soil types but are happier in light, sandy, well-drained soils. Walnuts are difficult to establish in the first year of planting and some die-back in the shoot tips is expected. For pickling, the nuts are best picked in July before the shells are formed. Test with a pin or skewer! Rich in antioxidants and omega-3 fatty acids.
