Pinus densiflora ‘Umbraculifera’ Pine

Syn: Tanyosho.

Description: Small, often multi-stemmed tree with a broad fan shaped crown, growing to 4 m tall and just as wide. Bright green needles appear in bundles of two, and may turn yellowish on some soils in winter. Masses of small cones are produced even on small trees, and mature trees produce attractive orange-brown flaking bark.

History: Native to Japan, and in cultivation since 1890.

Pinus Growing Tips: Ideally suited to exposed planting sites, dislikes shade and prefers free draining soil.
