Description: A spreading deciduous large shrub or tree with peeling, aromatic, grey bark. Large, ovoid to oval leaves are tapered, fresh green on the upper side, grey-green underneath. Drooping clusters of small, fragrant white flowers are followed by oblong, bristly, five-ribbed, golden-brown fruit.

History: Native to Japan and China, introduced in 1875. Received the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit.

Pterostyrax Growing Tips: Will grow in most deep soils but prefers neutral to slightly acid, well-drained soil. Will not tolerate shallow soil over chalk.
