A tree that has been grown in the field and then lifted out of the ground when dormant. Available from November to March. The roots are more open and the direct contact with the soil encourages them to settle in and establish more readily.
These are 2yr old trees that have been grown 1yr in the field and the second in a pot. Container trees can be planted at any time of the year but establish best when planted during the autumn and need to be watered well during the first summer.
Cotinus or Smoke Trees are easy to grow large shrubs. Vibrant foliage from spring to autumn turns shades of red and orange. The clouds of tiny pinkish flowers in summer earn the name smoke tree or bush.
They can grow quite large, but size can be maintained to shrub proportions with occasional hard pruning, that also encourages large succulent leaves. Cotinus succeed best in any well-drained preferably not too rich soil, in full sun.
Smoke Tree
Soft purplish-red leaves, purple-pink flower clusters in summer and scarlet leaves in the autumn.
Soft, round, deep maroon/reddish purple leaves, turn copper in autumn. Fluffy purple-pink flowers.
