A tree that has been grown in the field and then lifted out of the ground when dormant. Available from November to March. The roots are more open and the direct contact with the soil encourages them to settle in and establish more readily.
These are 2yr old trees that have been grown 1yr in the field and the second in a pot. Container trees can be planted at any time of the year but establish best when planted during the autumn and need to be watered well during the first summer.
Cryptomeria trees are large conifers of pyramidal to conical habit. When mature, the Japanese Cedar has beautiful burgundy, peeling bark. Distinctive foliage is bright green and spirally leaf-like needles that closely resemble ropes. The leaves bronze over in the autumn and winter and spiral around the branches. The first needles that appear in the spring tend to be very short compared to later produced needles.
The globe-shaped cones are mostly borne in clusters in autumn. A slow growing tree. Superb plants for foliage.
Best when planted in a well-drained, moist soil. No pruning is required to maintain it’s attractive form. Needs protection from spring frost and exposed areas, particularly the tree is young.
