A tree that has been grown in the field and then lifted out of the ground when dormant. Available from November to March. The roots are more open and the direct contact with the soil encourages them to settle in and establish more readily.
These are 2yr old trees that have been grown 1yr in the field and the second in a pot. Container trees can be planted at any time of the year but establish best when planted during the autumn and need to be watered well during the first summer.
The Juniperus, commonly known as juniper, is a diverse and adaptable genus of evergreen trees and shrubs belonging to the cypress family (Cupressaceae). With over 60 species distributed across the Northern Hemisphere, junipers are celebrated for their versatility, hardiness, and ornamental appeal.
Junipers are known for their needle-like or scale-like foliage, which comes in shades ranging from deep green to silvery blue, offering year-round color to gardens. Many varieties produce small, aromatic, berry-like cones that add visual interest and are famously used to flavor gin. These berries are also a valuable food source for birds and other wildlife. Depending on the species, junipers can grow as sprawling ground covers, upright shrubs, or stately trees, making them suitable for a wide range of landscape applications.
Species like Juniperus communis (common juniper) and Juniperus virginiana (Eastern red cedar) are popular choices for their resilience and aesthetic value. Junipers are drought-tolerant, thrive in poor soils, and require minimal maintenance, making them ideal for rock gardens, hedging, erosion control, and as specimen plants.
With their aromatic foliage, adaptability, and diverse forms, Juniperus trees and shrubs are a practical and beautiful choice for any garden.
