Walnut (Juglans) Mars

Description: Mars is from the same breeding programme as Jupiter and Saturn. Reliable cropper producing very good thin shelled nuts with an exceptional sweet flavour. Climatically suited to any UK conditions and great for garden planting and orchard planting. Used for pickling if the nuts are harvested in July when they're green or they can be picked in the Autumn when the nuts are ripe for drying and storing.

History: Originates from the Czech Republic in 1971.

Walnut Growing Tips: Prefer to be planted in full sun or light shade with a sheltered position with no frost pockets. Will tolerate many soil types but are happier in light, sandy, well-drained soils. Walnuts are difficult to establish in the first year of planting and some die-back in the shoot tips is expected. For pickling, the nuts are best picked in July before the shells are formed. Test with a pin or skewer! Rich in antioxidants and omega-3 fatty acids.
