Description: Cornus mas, also known as the Cornelian Cherry, has a spreading, open habit. Oval dark green leaves turn to reddish-purple in autumn. Tiny yellow flowers appear in February, followed by glossy red, cherry-like fruits. There are several ‘fruiting’ forms selected for their abundant astringent pearl drop fruits that make excellent compotes and jams.
History: Introduced in the late 1890s and received the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit in 1929.
Cornus Growing Tips: Thrives in fertile, humus-rich, neutral to acid soil. Unsuitable for shallow, chalky soils.
