Description: Big Ben is an early season variety that produces large blackcurrants, bearing more than double the fruit size of standard varieties. Excellent fresh flavour, sweet and rich when cooked. Best when eaten straight from the bush! Resistant to leaf spot and powdery mildew.
History: Developed by the Scottish Crop Research Institute.
Blackcurrant Growing Tips: Best planted in a sunny position that's sheltered from cold winds and late frosts. Prefer moisture-retentive soils that are well-drained but will tolerate a wide range of soils. When planting in the autumn or spring, cut back all of the shoots after planting. Although it will lose it's first year fruits, it will benefit the bush long term.
