Melrose Apple

Description: Melrose is a well coloured, American dessert apple. Fruit is large blushed bright crimson over milky yellow background. Flesh is creamy white, moderately firm and juicy with a sweet, sharp flavour. Attractive clusters of pinkish-white blossoms arrive during the spring. Grown on a large commercial scale in the USA, France and Poland. When grown in the UK it can be poorly coloured and slightly sour.

History: Raised by Freeman S. Howlett at Ohio Agricultural Experiment Station, Wooster, Ohio, USA. Selected in 1937 and later introduced in 1944. A popular apple of the 19th century Tweedside orchards.
