Northern Spy Apple

Apple

Description: Northern Spy is a large, American dessert apple. The fruit is dark red flush, green ground colour; some red stripes; becomes bright red over pale yellow fine russet dots; scarf skin at base. At best rich, intense flavour, sweet, plenty of fruit, acidity; crisp, cream flesh. Formerly major commercial and home orchard variety in north eastern states and Canada. Grown commercially and popular amateur all purpose fruit – for cooking, drying and juice. Its resistence to root woolly aphid led to use in rootstock breeding programmes.

History: USA; arose in c1800 in seedling orchard of Heman Chapin, East Bloomfield, New York, from seed brought from Salisbury. Introduced c1840 and listed in 1852 as a new variety of promise by American Pom Soc. Exported to the UK in C19th; overtaken by Jonathan and Delicious
