Malus 'Roberts Crab' (Dr Campbells)
Crab Apple
Malus 'Roberts Crab'(syn Dr Campbells)
Description: The abundant pink flowers in spring contrast well against the slightly bronzed new leaves. The dark red fruits ripen in late summer and are exceptionally large, about the size of a small apple. The very dark flesh makes delicious jams, jellies and is also very good for juicing, keeping its dark colour.
History: Marketed as Dr Campbell, in honour of Dr Ian Campbell, a scientist at the famous Long Ashton Research Station near Bristol, who was involved in important developments in virus-free rootstocks for apple trees and crab-apples.
Malus Growing Tips: Crab Apples are self-fertile, and very useful as pollinators for a variety of fruit trees. Full sun or part shade lover, best grown in fertile, moist, deep, loamy soils. Requires minimal pruning in late winter or spring to remove damaged, diseased or misplaced growth.
Height and Spread (after 10 years): 3m x 2m
