Calycanthus

Calycanthus trees belong to a small genus of 4 species from North America and East China. Also known as ‘sweetshrub’ or ‘carolina allspice’ they are deciduous, medium shrubs or small trees. Stunning, fragrant, Magnolia like flowers appear in spring, often continuing through the summer.

Calycanthus similar to Magnolias are one of the few plants that rely on beetles for pollination. The beetles are attracted by the spicy scent and are trapped within the nectarless flowers. Highly attractive in flower beds and borders within a cottage or informal garden setting.

Grow Calycanthus trees in moderately fertile well-drained soil in a full sun to partial shade position. Provide shelter to protect the tree from cold and drying winds. Light pruning in either early spring or late autumn will help to keep the shrub more manageable for smaller spaces.
