Description: Cercidiphyllum japonicum 'Rotfuchs', also known as Red Fox is a striking small to medium size tree, initially with a columnar crown that becomes a narrow oval after some years. The perfect choice for changing interest as its beautiful heart-shaped leaves change colour from spring through to autumn. Deep purple foliage in spring, matures to a rich green-blue colour by summer. Leaves glow yellow and gold before falling in autumn, releasing a pleasantly spicy/cinnamon scent. The tree is said to look like the tail of a fox when mature which gives it its common name 'Red Fox'.
History: Originated in Germany and raised from selected seedlings collected by Karl Fuchs at the Exotenwald at Weinheim around 1977.
Cercidiphyllum japonicum 'Rotfuchs' Growing Tips: Moist but well drained, acidic soils. Will tolerate some lime but will grow better and produce more vivid autumn colour in acid soil. Very hardy but vulnerable to late spring frosts as a young plant. Grows best in an area sheltered from strong winds.
