Cercis chinensis ‘Avondale’ Cercis

Cercis

Description: Cercis chinensis 'Avondale' is an ideal choice for a very small garden tree and can be grown in a large container for several years and, if pruned after flowering, will maintain a bushy and attractive rounded shape. Flowering well in this climate, it produces rich purple-pink flowers on bare stems in late April-May. Rich green, glossy heart shaped foliage emerges tinted red-purple when they unfurl. The foliage turns shades of buttery yellow in the autumn for added interest.

History: Received the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit.

Cercis Growing Tips: Performs best in moderately fertile well drained soils. The best flower production occurs in full sun but part shade is best in hot summer climates.
