Magnolia ‘Alba Superba’ (White) Magnolia

Magnolia

Magnolia soulangeana

Description: 'Alba Superba' is among the earliest clones to flower, making a hardy, upright shrub. The fragrant, cup and saucer shaped flowers are borne in profusion in April. They are pure white on the outside with a pinkish purple mark at the base of each petal. The deciduous leaves are a luscious green colour and fall every autumn. This Magnolia is ideal for planting near a seated area in the garden to fully appreciate the fragrant flowers.

History: This clone was raised in Belgium at the Van Geert Nursery of Ghent during the mid-nineteenth century. Received the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit in 1969.

Magnolia Growing Tips: Full sun to part shade lover, best grown in consistently moist, slightly acidic, well-drained soils. Provide sheltered site as buds and flowers may be damaged by cold winds, and late frosts. Shape and size can be controlled by pruning which should be done either immediately after flowering or during late summer.
