Magnolia ‘Caerhays Belle’ (Salmon Pink) Magnolia

Magnolia

M. sargentiana var robusta x M. sprengeri var ‘Diva’

Description: 'Caerphays Belle' is a small to medium-sized tree that produces large salmon-pink cup-shaped flowers to 30cm wide in great profusion in March. The 12 heavily textured broad tepals are spoon-shaped, the tips of the inner ones are curved upwards, thus highlighting the deeper colour of the outside of the tepal. This cultivator fruits freely, producing decorative pink-coloured seed cones up to 20cm long.

History: This is a deliberate cross carried out by Charles Michael, the head gardener of Caerhays Castle in Cornwall in 1951. It flowered for the first time in 1965. Received the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit in 2012.

Magnolia Growing Tips: Full sun to part shade lover, best grown in consistently moist, slightly acidic, well-drained soils. Provide sheltered site as buds and flowers may be damaged by cold winds, and late frosts. Shape and size can be controlled by pruning which should be done either immediately after flowering or during late summer.
