A tree that has been grown in the field and then lifted out of the ground when dormant. Available from November to March. The roots are more open and the direct contact with the soil encourages them to settle in and establish more readily.
These are 2yr old trees that have been grown 1yr in the field and the second in a pot. Container trees can be planted at any time of the year but establish best when planted during the autumn and need to be watered well during the first summer.
Magnolia trees are some of the most beautiful flowering trees. A large number of species and cultivars exist and our selection are only a few of the finest. Hybrids continue to be introduced at a rapid rate with a full range of colours from pure white to dark almost black reds. Our extensive range offers small, medium and large sized Magnolias meaning there is one suited to any sized garden.
These deciduous, semi-evergreen and evergreen trees prefer a well-drained site with shelter from cold winds, especially those that flower early. Tolerant of clay soils and pollution. Some varieties are chalk tolerant depending on parentage and whether on their own roots or grafted on a tolerant rootstock. Magnolia trees can take an occasional thinning-out of some of the branches to encourage fresh replacement growth.
The evergreen Bullbay or Loblolly magnolia is ideally suited for sheltered sites or as a wall shrub. Leathery, glossy green leaves set off the most beautiful, huge, creamy white fragrant flowers, appearing from July.
The Magnolia is named after Fresh botanist Pierre Magnol who was Professor of Botany and Director of the Royal Botanic Garden of Montpellier and a member of the Academie Royale des Sciences de Paris.
