These are 2yr old trees that have been grown 1yr in the field and the second in a pot. Container trees can be planted at any time of the year but establish best when planted during the autumn and need to be watered well during the first summer.
Lilac. Well known for their incredible flower and scent. Lilacs can be grown as a bushy shrub or small tree. They will tolerate most soils and do particularly well on chalky soil. A sunny, sheltered site is best for maximum blooms.
Most are cultivars of the common lilac, Syringa vulgaris that originated in Eastern Europe. It has been the focus of plant breeders for many years and there are over 500 varieties in circulation.
There are some other delightful species available such as Syringa tomentella, Syringa josikea, Syringa meyeri and Syringa villosa. These mostly originate from China, Japan and Korea. Syringa reticulata, also known as Japanese Tree Lilac, has large cream panicles of flowers and is well worth planting.
