Arbutus unedo

Strawberry Tree

Description: Arbutus unedo, also known as Kilarney Strawberry Tree is a small, evergreen, spreading tree with stunning autumnal features. The deep brown shedding bark creates an attractive contrast against the large dark green leathery leaves. Small, ‘urn-shaped’ white flowers and red strawberry-like fruits produce simultaneously in late autumn.

History: Originates from SW Ireland. Received a First Class Certificate in 1933.

Arbutus Growing Tips: Arbutus thrive in well-drained soil such as loam, clay or sand. Prefers to be planted in a full sun but in a sheltered position. Good for coastal sites and tolerant of lime.

Height and Spread (after 10 years) : 4m x 3m
