Catalpa tas 'Summer Bells'
Description: Catalpa 'Summer Bells' is a hybrid between Chilopsis and Catalpa. A small tree that's covered in dark green, narrow, lance-shaped leaves and is prized for the mass of pink, orchid-like blooms which appear on the tree throughout the summer. Starts flowering in late spring and flowers until late autumn.
History: Also known as the Desert Willow Tree, it was bred in Uzbekistan in the 1960s by crossing the Catalpa Indian Bean Tree with a Chilopsis. It is named for the willow-type leaves that are bright green.
Catalpa Growing Tips: Grow in a moist but well-drained, fertile soil in sun or part shade. Shelter from strong winds as these may shred the large leaves. Protect from late spring frosts when young. Hard prune every winter to increase leaf size.
