A tree that has been grown in the field and then lifted out of the ground when dormant. Available from November to March. The roots are more open and the direct contact with the soil encourages them to settle in and establish more readily.
These are 2yr old trees that have been grown 1yr in the field and the second in a pot. Container trees can be planted at any time of the year but establish best when planted during the autumn and need to be watered well during the first summer.
Kiwi vines are a special addition to the garden. Very hardy, vigorous, twining climbers with highly ornamental leaves and flowers. An excellent variety to cover walls or stumps. All varieties are self fertile. Egg shaped, brown, furry fruits that are high in vitamin C. They definitely show off their beauty when the inner flesh is sliced. Inside the greenish-brown skin, kiwi fruits have an interesting pattern. A tasty snack, and can be used in many popular desserts like fruit salads and pavlova.
They need plenty of space for growth and a sheltered, sunny position. In summer, prune out the branches to encourage fruiting for the following year. It’s a very important commercial crop in New Zealand, hence why they’re known as Kiwi vines.
