A tree that has been grown in the field and then lifted out of the ground when dormant. Available from November to March. The roots are more open and the direct contact with the soil encourages them to settle in and establish more readily.
These are 2yr old trees that have been grown 1yr in the field and the second in a pot. Container trees can be planted at any time of the year but establish best when planted during the autumn and need to be watered well during the first summer.
The Robinia, commonly known as the black locust, is a fast-growing deciduous tree prized for its fragrant flowers, graceful form, and hardiness. Native to North America, particularly the Appalachian region, this tree belongs to the Fabaceae family and is widely cultivated for its ornamental value, erosion control, and timber production.
Robinia trees are known for their clusters of pea-like flowers, which range in color from white to pale pink and bloom in late spring to early summer. These highly fragrant blooms attract bees, butterflies, and other pollinators, making Robinia a valuable addition to wildlife-friendly gardens. The flowers are often followed by long, flat seed pods that add further seasonal interest.
The foliage consists of pinnate leaves that create a soft, airy canopy, providing dappled shade in gardens or landscapes. Popular species like Robinia pseudoacacia (black locust) are celebrated for their versatility and ability to thrive in poor soils, thanks to their nitrogen-fixing capabilities. Cultivars such as Robinia pseudoacacia ‘Frisia’ are particularly valued for their striking golden-yellow foliage.
Robinia trees are highly adaptable, tolerating a wide range of soil types, urban pollution, and drought conditions, though they prefer well-drained soils and full sun. They are often used in reforestation projects, erosion control, and as ornamental trees in gardens or parks. However, care should be taken with suckering and potential invasiveness in certain regions.
Whether you’re looking for a hardy ornamental tree or an ecological solution for challenging sites, Robinia trees are a beautiful and practical choice.
