Excelsior of Taynton

Walnut

Description: Excelsior of Taynton is a most revered variety. Now revived and thriving well. Great for pickling if the Walnuts are picked unripe in mid-summer or they can be picked in the Autumn for drying and storing.

History: Winner of 700 entries in a Countrywide Walnut Competition in 1923.

Walnut Growing Tips: Prefer to be planted in full sun or light shade with a sheltered position with no frost pockets. Will tolerate many soil types but are happier in light, sandy, well-drained soils. Walnuts are difficult to establish in the first year of planting and some die-back in the shoot tips is expected. For pickling, the nuts are best picked in July before the shells are formed. Test with a pin or skewer! Rich in antioxidants and omega-3 fatty acids.
