Plums, Gages, Damsons and Mirabelles

21/20/2020

Plums are embarking on a new phase of opportunity after considerable orchard reduction and market over supply. Our links with European breeders bring high yielding quality fruit trees. Blue plums are available, together with sophisticated Mirabelles and a wider selection of Gages.

With a range of new rootstocks with tree size control, large fruit influence and a wider soil tolerance there are some good opportunities.

We act as exclusive agents for Gräb Nursery in Germany. Their specialist approach produces the finest quality trees on the most suitable of nursery soils to the very highest specification. They also offer through our portfolio the most recent varieties from their own breeding programme and the progeny of other stone fruit breeding programmes throughout the world.

Damsons

Our richly astringent flavoured damsons are available grown on a range of rootstocks. All varieties are self fertile.

Gages

There are many similar varieties in appearance within this group, with a range of ripening times. Various trials are in place to identify the most viable UK conditions.

Mirabelle

There are many interesting interspecific fruit available which have gained interest. The Prunus family is cross compatible and has resulted in the development in new varieties. These include the older Mirabelles (Cherry x Plum) and more modern Miracots (Mirabelle x Apricot) and Plumcots (Plum x Apricot).

Plums

We grow our commercial plum trees on a range of rootstocks. They come in shades of blue, purple and reds.

The following varieties provide a spread of picking times, quality and reliability.
