Parentage: Kidd’s Orange Red x Golden Delicious
Description: Gala is a highly coloured dessert apple that is one of the most popular supermarket apple varieties in the world! A reliable cropper of good, small, crisp and well flavoured fruit with a golden-yellow thin skin. Improved colour forms are grown commercially such as ‘Mondial’ and ‘Royal’ Gala which appear in the shops.
History: Raised by J.Hutton Kidd at Greytown, Wairarapa, New Zealand in about 1934. Given its name in 1965 by Dr W.M. McKenzie, DSIR, Havelock North.
