A tree that has been grown in the field and then lifted out of the ground when dormant. Available from November to March. The roots are more open and the direct contact with the soil encourages them to settle in and establish more readily.
These are 2yr old trees that have been grown 1yr in the field and the second in a pot. Container trees can be planted at any time of the year but establish best when planted during the autumn and need to be watered well during the first summer.
The Apple is part of our cultural heritage, with thousands of known varieties suitable for cooking delicious pies or eating straight from the tree. Apple trees can be harvested from August until November and can be stored for many months after depending on the variety. Some varieties of fruit can last right up until Christmas and beyond!
Most varieties of apple have known parents that have been selected by the breeder. The first name is always the female or the flower from whence the apple will be produced and the second name is always the male or pollen donor. We grow a selection of Apple trees for sale with a range of varieties that are available on the very dwarf to very vigorous rootstocks. We have an apple tree suitable for every UK garden and most varieties can also be grown in containers.
Pruning can take place any time of the year. Structural pruning should be done in the winter and light pruning and shaping in the summer to encourage more flowers and fruit for the following year.
Apple trees also produce a mass of beautiful pink and white blossoms, and some varieties produce a wonderful crop of mistletoe. Listed here is a small selection, but combines a geographical spread of some of the most interesting old favourites and the very latest introductions. Exceptional Quality from Frank P Matthews As one of the UK’s leading specialist tree nurseries, Frank P Matthews has spent generations growing high-quality fruit trees, including a wide selection of apple trees suited to every garden size and style. From compact dwarf apple trees for small spaces and patios to traditional free standing apple trees on more vigorous rootstocks, the range includes both heritage and modern apple varieties known for their disease resistance, excellent flavour and reliable cropping. Many produce delicious dessert apples with a sweet or refreshing flavour, while others offer firm, tart apples ideal for baking and classic cooking apples. Whether you prefer large fruits, juicy apples, or something with a subtle nutty flavour, the collection offers plenty of choice for anyone looking to buy apple trees suitable for UK growing conditions. Planting, Growing and Caring for Your Apple Trees All of the container grown trees, potted apple trees and bare root trees are carefully raised to ensure healthy growth from the moment they are planted. Newly planted apple trees will thrive in fertile soil with regular watering, especially during dry spells in the growing season. Many young apple trees belong to the same pollination group or are a self-fertile variety, making them easy to manage as they begin to bear fruit. With their beautiful apple blossom in early spring, followed by early apples in late summer through to mid or late autumn, these trees offer a long and rewarding harvest period. It is easy to prune apple trees, carry out summer pruning and keep issues such as apple scab, codling moth and other fungal diseases under control. Whether planted in a raised bed, grown in full sun or trained into decorative forms, these Malus domestica trees provide delicious fruit that can be eaten straight from the tree, stored for months or enjoyed in a wide variety of dishes.
