Acer trees, known as Maple or Sycamore trees, are a diverse and mostly hardy group, easy to grow in a wide range of soils. They thrive in sun or partial shade and include such delights as Japanese and snakebark maples.
Spectacular leaves, incredibly varied in size, shape and colour, are their predominate feature, whilst most also develop brilliant autumn colour.
Although not known as flowering trees, many have attractive, small, delicate flowers in spring before the leaves unfold. These may be followed by colourful fruits in late summer and autumn.
There are many popular species within the genus; Sycamore trees (Acer pseudoplatanus), Canadian Maple (ruburum) and Norway Maple (platanoides) just to name a few!
For Japanese maple trees, see the Acer palmatum page.
