Taxodium distichum Taxodium

Taxodium

Swamp Cypress

Description: A deciduous coniferous tree to 20m or more, with a conical crown, and fibrous red-brown bark. The feathery foliage is bright green, needle-like and turns bright orange in the autumn. Produces small, round seed cones that are purple when young. A classic for waterside planting.

History: Native to the Florida Everglades and introduced into the UK in the early 1640’s by John Tradescant. Received the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit.

Taxodium Growing Tips: Prefers to have access to good sources of moisture in the soil and will tolerate water logged soil well.  Requires plenty of water in the first 2 years after planting to ensure that it will thrive.
